Rumor: 3 versions of XBOX Next
The Inquirer is reporting that Microsoft is planning 3 different versions of the next-generation XBOX. Supposedly, there will be a basic XBOX Next, which won't have a hard drive, and an XBOX Next HD, which will include a hard drive and PVR functionality, launching in the Fall of 2005.
In the Fall of 2006, the XBOX Next PC will launch. It will basically be a PC in an XBOX's clothing. According to the article, the XBOX Next PC will run "Windows and all standard PC software. It also includes CD Burner, Wireless keyboard, mouse and controller and will work best connected to a high-definition TV or PC monitor. Media Center functionality - like movies, music and photos - is also included. The device will also play most available PC games." I think that the ability to play PC games will be the one feature that allows Microsoft to finally take the lead in the console wars. I just wish that was part of the basic model.
BTW, he source for all of The Inquirer's info is a slide from a presentation given to analysts last year. I guess we'll have to wait and see how this all shakes out.
