BellSouth's DNS servers suck
I am really starting to get tired of BellSouth DSL service. I spent most of the weekend without internet access due to BellSouth DNS issues.
See, a couple of weeks ago, I turned off the box that I had been running a DNS caching server off of. I didn't think it was worth the extra electricity to run it. Since then, though, I have been plagued with timeouts due to DNS lookups.
I am able to connect to my modem, configure it and test it (seems to eliminate the modem). I am also able to connect to any machine within my LAN with no problems (seems to eliminate the router). I've even reset both of those to their factory defaults and manually configured them again.
Where the whole things craps out is when I do DNS lookups. My browser status window shows "Looking up cnn.com" for about 30 seconds then the page times out.
After doing a couple of Google searches, it appears that BellSouth is pretty notorious for having DNS problems. I guess it is time to fire that DNS server back up and point it to an external DNS server.

Comments:
Try setting up treewalk DNS on your computer point your nic card to 127.0.0.1 and just start typing in random address that you often visit. (eventually it will learn what you visit and resolve in under a ms)
I have a BellSouth Dialup service and it takes forever just to get on the Internet. Sometimes, I cannot even get online because it says Google.com isn't found or I'm not connected.
When I first installed BellSouth, it would not accept my password or user ID. I gave them a call and resetted my user name and password.
BellSouth drives everyone in my family crazy with their service. I would switch to a DSL by Comcast, but I've had problems with Comcast. They kept canceling my DSL appointment. I got tired of them screwing up the DSL appointment and a cable I didn't even sign up for.

I'm a retired AeroSpace Quality Assurance Manager. My Bellsouth DSL usually runs at half speed (1.5 gig vs 3.0) They have replaced the modem. Some help- but not enough. The phone lines have static off and on. They can't seem to fix it. In my line of work this would not be tolerated.
They could use more troubleshooting training in my opinion.
