Watch ripped DVDs on your XBOX 360
One of the coolest features of the XBOX 360 is the ability to stream media, especially video, from a Windows Media Center 2005 PC. So, I figured I would share a quick how-to for putting your favorite DVDs onto your MCE box so that you can stream them to your XBOX 360.

First, here is the software that you will need (the first two of which are free):

1. DVD Decrypter
2. VOB2MPEG
3. Windows Media Center 2005

NOTE: This how-to presumes that you have the XBOX 360 and the Media Center PC configured to share media files before you start.

Once you have the software installed and a DVD in your MCE box's drive, here is how you get the DVD to your PC's hard drive:

NOTE: The red numbers on the screenshots correspond with the steps in the process.

1. Open DVD Decrypter and set it to "File" mode by selecting "Mode" then "File"

2. Configure DVD Decrypter to create a single VOB by selecting "Tools" then "Settings" then the "File Mode" tab. In the right side of the "File Mode" tab, change the File Splitting menu to "None." This will create a single VOB file which will make it easier when you use VOB2MPEG later.

3. Select the directory where you want to store the VOB files in the "Destination" section of the interface
4. Click the DVD-arrow-hard drive icon at the bottom to start the process which will take between 5-10 minutes (depending on the size of the disc and the speed of your machine)

After ripping the DVD as a single VOB, here is how you convert it to an MPEG (since the XBOX 360 won't stream VOB files):

1. Open VOB2MPEG

vob2mpeg_screen

2. Select the directory where your ripped VOB file is stored
3. Select the directory where you want to save your soon-to-be-created MPEG file. Choose any of the directories that you are currently sharing between the MCE box and the XBOX 360. This way, you won't have to change any settings on the console or the MCE box in order to watch your new file.
4. Press "Start"

After about 10-15 minutes, your MPEG file will be ready. You will probably want to delete the original VOB file to save hard drive space.

Now, just got to the Media Center menu (on either your XBOX 360 or your MCE box) and select My Videos. You should see your new file in the folder with the rest of your video files.

That's it!

Hi There, Firstly thanks for all the info. I have been searching for the answer to my question of "How can i watch DVD's saved to my hard drive for weeks. I followed your instructions to the T however when VOB2MPEG converts it only seems to take the intro file when i specifically said in DVD Decrypter to make one file? Any suggestions?

just wanted to thank you for the nice write up and educating the community of this neat trick, I have the following to Add.

I have VISTA Ultimate (with media center) installed, and I pretty much do the same DVD DEcrypter steps, and then just rename the .VOB to .MPG and voila .. all works. I also get the TRUE 5.1 surround sound from the dvd as well (not sure if you XP media center already does so after vob conversion)

FYI: VOB is just an MPEG4 file. Its like the old days, the .DAT file on video CD was easy to rename to .AVI and it worked.

I tried changing the file extension from VOB to MPG; however, Windows Media Player could not handle it. Neither could the 360.

When I use the VOB to MPG i got 2 MPG files. One super quality with no sound. And one very very very bad quality video with no sound.

Wath thit I do wrong?

That's a new one for me. I've had a problem where VOB2MPEG chokes on certain VOB files and creates an empty MPEG file (still haven't figured out what is wrong there).

However, I haven't heard of the issue you're having. Sorry.

This process does work but this application is much easier and cleaner picture. The program TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress is all you need. It will take most any file format or unprotected DVD and convert to a varibal size Mpeg. It includes film editing software, video compression, and 1 software simplicity.

I have had some luck, with a different process, convert your dvd's to divx files and then use MCE video encoder and get the latest ffdshow files and you can stream to the xbox 360 plus divx supports HD 1080P. I am trying to see if the MCE encoder will stream the vob file itself but I have to get all the vob file into one file, MCE encoder wont stream multiple files it has to be one file, I will let you know how it works out

I normally go dvd to divx and use MCE video encoder to stream it works great I am goign to see if I can get it to stream a vob file in a minute
